I’ve used Membean for nearly four years, and it’s definitely helped me grow my vocabulary. But one thing that’s always stood out to me is the lack of LGBTQ+ representation. Every word example, relationship, and image I’ve come across has been completely heterosexual, with no mention of transgender or non-binary people, or even common LGBTQ+ terms. Membean says it’s “made with ❤️ in Portland,” which is one of the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the U.S. — but that love doesn’t seem to extend to this community in the content itself. I think Membean could be so much more impactful if it made space for everyone. I really hope to see growth and change in this area soon.
